MLS W.O.R.K.S. To Host Two Community Service Projects In Seattle During The Week Leading Up To MLS Cup 2009

MLS players and executives join local volunteers to leave behind a lasting legacy
NEW YORK (Monday, November 16, 2009) - MLS W.O.R.K.S., Major League Soccer's community outreach initiative, will be conducting two community service projects during the MLS Cup 2009 festivities in Seattle. The projects are part of the launch of the MLS W.O.R.K.S. Community Service Program, a collaborative effort to combine sport and service, promote good will within MLS markets and improve lives and communities at the grassroots level.

On Thursday, November 19, MLS W.O.R.K.S. will join forces with MLS corporate partner The Home Depot and their associates, organizers from KaBOOM! and local volunteers to build a new playground for the more than 600 children who attend Van Asselt Elementary School. MLS players and MLS Commissioner Don Garber will be participating in the event. The playground build is part of The Home Depot's ongoing commitment to give back to the communities it serves and is funded through a grant from The Home Depot, along with a contribution from Seattle Public Schools.

On Saturday, November 21, MLS W.O.R.K.S. and the City of Seattle will host "Clean and Green Seattle" to promote the importance of environmental sustainability. MLS players and executives, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels and other Seattle government officials will team up with volunteers from Washington Youth Soccer, members of the local community and Seattle Sounders FC players, executives and fans to plant trees, pick up litter and restore green spaces near Qwest Field.

"Clean and Green Seattle" will highlight MLS W.O.R.K.S. GREENER GOALS, the League's environmental platform that identifies ways to reduce our carbon footprint and raise awareness about environmental issues throughout the soccer community. Additional MLS W.O.R.K.S. GREENER GOALS elements will include reduction of the game day carbon use during MLS Cup by offsetting energy in partnership with Bonneville Environmental Foundation, distributing reusable bags and eco-tip wallet guides to fans and partnering with the Pepsi Recycling Program in-stadium to maximize recycling efforts.

"MLS W.O.R.K.S. is proud to give back to the Seattle community," said JoAnn Neale, executive vice president of Major League Soccer. "The success that the Sounders FC franchise has experienced in its inaugural year has been nothing short of spectacular. We are happy to leave behind a lasting legacy in a community that has really embraced Major League Soccer."

MLS W.O.R.K.S.is committed to creating sustainable projects that will leave a lasting legacy. The playground build and "Clean and Green Seattle" are a part of the MLS W.O.R.K.S. Community Service Program. MLS W.O.R.K.S. GREENER GOALS serves to encourage MLS clubs, players, corporate partners and fans to support and build a cleaner, healthier environment.
